READ E-newsletter – Q4 2026

Aloha,

At the Research and Economic Analysis Division (READ), our work focuses on providing reliable, timely information about Hawaiʻi's economy. From employment and tourism to energy, business activity and economic forecasts, our research supports decision-making across the public and private sectors.

This quarter, we highlight several important resources, including the latest State of Hawaiʻi Data Book, our updated inter-county economic study and new research examining business investment in innovation. These publications offer insights into the economic forces shaping our communities and the opportunities ahead.

As we look toward 2027, we want to make READ's research easier to find, understand and apply. Our goal is to help more people access the information they need to make informed decisions for Hawaiʻi.

Thank you for your continued interest in our work.

Seth Colby, Ph.D., Chief State Economist

2025 State of Hawaiʻi Data Book Offers Comprehensive Look at the Islands

How has Hawaiʻi changed over time? The newly released 2025 State of Hawaiʻi Data Book offers a comprehensive look at the state through 832 statistical tables covering 24 subject areas.

Now in its 58th edition, the Data Book serves as a resource for businesses, researchers, policymakers and anyone interested in Hawaiʻi's economic and social trends.

This year's edition also introduces an accessibility improvement. All tables have been redesigned to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards and are available for download in Excel format.

New Study Examines Economic Connections Across Hawaiʻi's Counties

Economic activity in one county often has effects beyond its borders. READ's updated 2022 Hawaiʻi Inter-County Input-Output Study provides insight into these connections and helps measure how changes in one industry or county affect the broader economy.

The study includes economic multipliers for 20 industry sectors, allowing researchers and policymakers to estimate how changes in tourism, construction, government spending and other activities affect economic output, earnings, employment and state tax revenues.

By examining economic relationships across Hawaiʻi's four counties, the study provides information to support regional planning, economic development and public policy decisions.

Hawaiʻi Businesses Report $39.3 Million in Research Expenses

Twenty qualified high technology businesses reported $39.3 million in Hawaiʻi-based research expenses under the state's research activities tax credit program for the 2025 tax year.

READ's latest report shows certified tax credits totaling $3.3 million, with modest increases in participating businesses, research expenses and certified credits compared with 2024.

The report covers the second year of operations under revised small-business eligibility and incremental credit calculation rules established by Act 139 (2024).

Understanding Hawaiʻi's Visitor Experience

How satisfied are visitors with their Hawaiʻi experience? The second quarter 2026 Visitor Satisfaction Survey provides findings by visitor market and island, offering insights into visitor perceptions and experiences.

The survey is part of READ's ongoing tourism research, which examines visitor activity, spending, accommodations and travel trends to help businesses, policymakers and industry stakeholders understand changes in Hawaiʻi's visitor industry.
