India Signs "Historic" LPG Import Deal with US
Hardeep Singh Puri, India’s Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, described the arrangement as India's first "structured contract of US LPG for the Indian market."
"One of the largest and the world’s fastest growing LPG market opens up to the United States," Puri noted on US social media platform X.
He added that, "In our endeavour to provide secure affordable supplies of LPG to the people of India, we have been diversifying our LPG sourcing."
Calling the move a "significant development," Puri stated that India’s Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) oil companies have "successfully concluded" a year-long agreement for imports.
According to Puri, the deal will see India importing 2.2 million tons of LPG annually, representing nearly 10% of the country’s yearly imports.
He mentioned that Indian oil firms have been negotiating with major US producers over recent months to finalize the contract.
The announcement comes amid strained trade relations between the two nations, following the Trump administration’s 50% tariffs on Indian goods, which were partially linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
